Fel-based Coherent Electron Cooling for High-energy Hadron Colliders *

چکیده
Cooling intense high-energy hadron beams is a major challenge in modern accelerator physics. Synchrotron radiation is too feeble and two common methods – stochastic and electron cooling – are not efficient in providing significant cooling for high energy, high intensity proton colliders. In this paper we discuss a practical scheme of Coherent Electron Cooling (CeC), which promises short cooling times (below one hour) for intense proton beams in RHIC at 250 GeV or in LHC at 7 TeV [1]. A possibility of CeC using various microwave instabilities was discussed since 1980s [2]. In this paper, we present first evaluation of specific CeC scheme based on capabilities of present-day accelerator technology, ERLs, and high-gain Free-Electron Lasers (FELs). We discuss the principles, the main limitations of this scheme and present some predictions for Coherent Electron Cooling in RHIC and the LHC operating with ions or protons, summarized in Table 1.

Proof-of-principle Experiment for Fel-based Coherent Electron Cooling*
Coherent electron cooling (CEC) has a potential to significantly boost luminosity of high-energy, highintensity hadron-hadron and electron-hadron colliders. In a CEC system, a hadron beam interacts with a cooling electron beam. A perturbation of the electron density caused by ions is amplified and fed back to the ions to reduce the energy spread and the emittance of the ion beam. To demonstrate...
متن کاملReevaluation of Coherent Electron Cooling Gain Factor∗
An important element in the concept of coherent electron cooling [1] is amplification of the electric field induced by a point charge in an electron beam passing through an FEL amplifier. We calculate this factor in 1D FEL theory and show that it is equal to the conventional FEL gain (for the field) multiplied by the relative bandwidth of the FEL amplifier, which is typically a small parameter ...

Cooling intense high-energy hadron beams remains a major challenge in modern accelerator physics. Synchrotron radiation of such beams is too feeble to provide significant cooling: even in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) with 7 TeV protons, the longitudinal damping time is about thirteen hours. Decrements of traditional electron cooling decrease rapidly as the high power of beam energy, and an e...

A novel method of electron beam cooling is considered which can be used for linear colliders. The electron beam is cooled during collision with focused powerful laser pulse. With reasonable laser parameters (laser flash energy about 10 J) one can decrease transverse beam emittances by a factor about 10 per one stage. The ultimate transverse emittances are much below of that given by other metho...
متن کاملUltimate luminosities and energies of photon colliders ∗
A photon collider luminosity and its energy are determined by the parameters of an electron-electron linear collider (energy, power, beam emittances) and collision effects. The main collision effect is the coherent e+e− pair creation. At low energies (2E< 0.5–1 TeV) this process is suppressed due to repulsion of electron beams. In this region Lγγ(z > 0.65) ≥ 1035cm−2s−1 is possible (1033 − 1034...
